What is Zero to Eight?

You don't need
to be fearless.

Zero to Eight is an eight-week bull riding and personal development program for people who want to challenge themselves, learn the sport properly and see what they're capable of.

  • You don't need to already be a bull rider.
  • You don't need to walk through the gate fearless.
  • You don't need to prove anything to anyone.

You just need to be willing to turn up, listen, learn, train and step outside your comfort zone. Everyone will start at a different level, and everyone will progress differently. That's exactly what Zero to Eight is about.

There's a lot more to bull riding than climbing onto a bull and trying to hang on. We're going to teach you the process — the bulls, your equipment, your body, riding technique, chute procedure, preparation and the mental side of the sport.

  1. Train on the barrel.
  2. A dedicated session at Tim Kelly's on the mechanical bull.
  3. Progress onto suitable live bulls when you're ready.
  4. Attend a live rodeo together and learn to study both bull and rider.
  5. Week 8: the Zero to Eight In-House Rodeo.

But this isn't about comparing yourself to the person beside you, or putting pressure on yourself to reach the same point as someone else. It's about where you started, how far you've come and having the courage to keep taking the next step.

The 8-Week Journey

From zero
to eight.

Week 1

Welcome to Fall Seven

This is where zero begins.

Week 1 is about understanding the environment, the animals, the sport and yourself.

  • Meet and greet
  • Introduction to Fall Seven Ranch and The Buck Yard
  • The complete Zero to Eight journey
  • Your individual goals and what you want from the program
  • Ranch and arena procedures
  • Understanding bull behaviour and body language
  • Basic stock handling
  • Respect and care for the bulls
  • Rider, crew and bull safety
  • Working safely around pens and chutes
  • Introduction to bull-riding equipment
  • Basic fitness and movement assessment

Before you learn to ride the animal, you need to understand and respect it.

Week 2

Build the Foundation

Good habits before pressure.

Now we start developing the fundamentals of a bull rider. Nobody needs to rush — we're building the foundation first.

  • Bull-riding-specific fitness
  • Core, legs and hips
  • Grip strength
  • Mobility
  • Balance
  • Reaction
  • Conditioning
  • Warm-up and recovery
  • Correct riding position
  • Hip movement
  • Foot position
  • Free-arm position
  • Staying square
  • Timing
  • Introduction to barrel work
  • Introduction to ropes and protective equipment

Week 3

Rope, Gear, Barrel & Chute

Make the process familiar.

Now we start connecting everything. We'll progress the barrel work while teaching you how to take responsibility for your own preparation.

  • Bull rope setup
  • Rope placement and preparation
  • Taking your wrap
  • Gear checks
  • Helmet, vest, glove and spurs
  • Developing your own pre-ride routine
  • Getting safely into the chute
  • Getting onto a bull
  • Setting your rope
  • Finding your starting position
  • Working with the chute crew
  • Communication in the chute
  • Staying composed
  • Preparing to call for the gate

The aim is to make the process familiar before the pressure is added.

Week 4

Mechanical Bull

Learn it. Feel it. Correct it. Repeat it.

A dedicated training session at Tim Kelly's on the mechanical bull — introducing movement and repetition in a controlled environment. It's also our chance to identify what you need to work on. Everyone will be different.

  • Starting position
  • Balance
  • Timing
  • Hip movement
  • Foot position
  • Free-arm control
  • Turns in both directions
  • Direction changes
  • Reaction
  • Staying square
  • Getting back to centre

Week 5

Live Bulls

Progression before ego.

Now we begin putting everything together on live bulls matched to your experience, development and ability. You'll take responsibility for the whole process yourself: preparing your gear, preparing yourself, getting into the chute, setting your rope, finding your position — and when you're ready, nodding your head.

  • Complete chute procedure
  • Starting position
  • The first jump
  • Staying square
  • Hip movement
  • Foot position
  • Free-arm control
  • Following the bull
  • Getting back to centre
  • Turns and direction changes
  • Safe dismounts
  • Getting clear of the bull safely

Nobody needs to ride the same bull. Nobody needs to progress at the same speed. And nobody needs to prove how tough they are.

Week 6

Ride. Review. Correct.

Then get back on.

By now, everyone will have different strengths and different things to work on, so the coaching becomes more individual. You'll ride. We'll review it. What did you do well? Where did you lose position? What did the bull do? How did you react? What can we improve? That might mean going back to the barrel, changing your position, improving your chute procedure or working on a movement before getting back on.

We'll also work on the mental side:

  • Confidence
  • Controlling nerves
  • Dealing with fear
  • Staying focused
  • Chute mentality
  • Resetting after a difficult ride
  • Getting back up after being bucked off
  • Trusting your preparation
  • Not comparing your progress to somebody else's

Every ride should teach you something.

Week 7

Live Rodeo Experience

Watch. Study. Understand. Apply.

We leave The Buck Yard and watch the sport happen for real. As a group, we'll attend a live rodeo — but you're not going just to watch. You're going to study it like a bull rider, reading the bulls themselves and not just the person on their back.

  • How the rider prepares
  • Rope and gear setup
  • Chute procedure
  • Starting position
  • Bull behaviour in the chute
  • The bull's first jump
  • Bucking style
  • Power and timing
  • Turns and direction changes
  • How the rider reacts
  • Hip movement
  • Foot position
  • Free-arm position
  • Staying square
  • Getting back to centre
  • Where riders lose position
  • Why rides go wrong
  • What riders do well
  • How different riders handle different styles of bulls

By this stage, you'll notice things you wouldn't have seen when you walked through the gate in Week 1.

Week 8

Zero to Eight
In-House Rodeo

This is your day.

Week 8 isn't another normal training session. It's the Zero to Eight In-House Rodeo at Fall Seven Ranch — your opportunity to put everything you've learned over the previous seven weeks into practice.

Warm up. Prepare your own equipment. Check your rope. Get your bull draw. Study your bull. Talk through your plan. Get behind the chutes. When your name is called, climb down. Set your rope. Take your wrap. Set your feet. Find your position. Control the nerves. And when you're ready…

Nod your head.

Whatever happens after that gate opens, the journey to get there is something you've earned. Maybe you make the whistle. Maybe you don't. That's not the measure of whether you've succeeded.

Think about the person who walked through the gate in Week 1. Then think about the person sitting in that chute in Week 8.

  • You understand the stock.
  • You understand your equipment.
  • You've trained your body.
  • You've learned the chute.
  • You've ridden bulls.
  • You've made mistakes.
  • You've hit the dirt.
  • You've made corrections.
  • You've faced your nerves.
  • You've supported the people training beside you.

And most importantly, you've found out something about yourself.

That's Zero to Eight.

What do you get out of it?

Bigger than
bull riding.

Yes, we're going to teach you how to ride a bull. But what you take away from these eight weeks can be much bigger than bull riding.

Confidence
Proving to yourself that you can take on something difficult.
Fitness
Developing strength, balance, mobility, reactions and conditioning.
Discipline
Learning to prepare properly and consistently turn up.
Resilience
Getting knocked down, learning from it and getting back up.
Focus
Learning to block out the noise and concentrate on what's directly in front of you.
Respect
For the bulls, the sport, your coaches and the people around you.
Knowledge
Understanding bull riding rather than simply hanging onto a rope.
Community
Training alongside people who are taking on their own challenge.
Courage
Understanding that being nervous or scared doesn't mean you can't do it.

The goal isn't to finish better than somebody else.
The goal is to finish better than you started.

Safety & progression

Bull riding is an inherently dangerous sport. The safety of the rider, crew and stock comes first throughout Zero to Eight.

All participants will be required to complete the appropriate waivers and follow Fall Seven Ranch safety procedures.

Progression onto live bulls and the selection of stock will be based on individual ability, development and safety. There is no pressure to progress simply because somebody else has.

This isn't about ego or proving how tough you are. It's about learning, progressing and earning your next step.
